Before you do that if it has dents or gouges can be removed or lessened by steaming, put a very wet cloth or paper towel over the area to be treated and apply a very hot clothes iron, I use an old steam iron. If the wood needs cleaning rub with some fine steel will lubricating with some linseed oil and then wipe clean. The spots will not completely disappear but will smooth out, and the oil being rubbed in will stop further rust deeper into the metal. Rub or burnish the rust spots with the smooth shank end of the bit. Use some oil and hold the bit by the fluted part, you might wrap some tape around it to handle easier. Get a new drill bit, size is of no real concern, just not too small to handle, 1/4" is common and ok.
